What to see and do in Seward
Seward is the gateway to the Kenai Fords National Park, where ice, mountains and sea come together. This is a landscape still under development, with the constant interplay of natural forces. Forty glaciers flow from Harding Ice Field, the crowning glory of the park. Kenai Fords is an all-season destination. In winter, you can explore the park from the Exit Glacier, on snow shoes, cross country skies or a dog sled. In summer, cruise expeditions can take you for a half day tour in the protected waters of Resurrection Bay, or stay out all day to take in the tide-water glaciers, further afield.
Late March to early May is the time to see the migration of California Grey whales, on their 5000-mile journey from the Mexican Baja Coast to the summer feeding grounds in the Bering and Chuckchi Seas. The whales pass close by Seward harbour, and visitors can take sightseeing cruises to be close to the action.
The Alaska Sea-Life Centre is the world’s first cold-water marine institute and features interesting and interactive exhibits.
Safe Driving in Seward
Timing is important when travelling Alaska in your RV rental. Early May until late September is the best time for a road trip, away from extreme winter weather, or troublesome spring thaws. That said, if you are in Alaska for winter sports, once the highways become snow packed and temperatures stay low, the road surface will become extremely stable, and many veteran Alaskan highway drivers prefer these conditions. Keep headlights on at all times.
